2006-2007 HUMAA Scholarship Awards Ceremony

Dr. Lena F. Edwards Scholarship: ($1,000)
This scholarship, established by the late Dr. Lena F. Edwards, Class of 1924, award is given to an African American female student from the District of Columbia who evidences need and who intends to engage in a family medicine practice. This award made during the freshman year, continues for three years, providing the student remains in good standing.

Alaina N. Fields

Dr. Melvin D. Gerald & Dr.William E. Matory Scholarship: ($1,000)
This scholarship has been established by Dr. Melvin D. Gerald, Class of 1970 and Dr. William E. Matory, Class of 1953. In awarding this scholarship, preference is given to a third year student in good standing who plans to engage in a family medicine practice.

Steve Pierre

Dr. King S. Jones Scholarship: ($1,000)
This scholarship, established in 1994, is given in memory of Dr. King S. Jones, Class of 1925. In awarding this scholarship, preference is given to residents of Indiana.

Ulric Bigby

Dr. Monroe Crawford Memorial Scholarship: ($1,000)
E. Monroe Crawford, M.D '62, in memory of his father, Dr. Monroe Crawford, Class of 1927, established this award in 1977. The late Dr. Crawford made medical history by discovering and reporting the first known case of tularemia (rabbit fever) in the South. The recipient of this scholarship is chosen from Howard medical students who reside in South Carolina, Mississippi or Texas.

John Davis 

Dr. Leon R. McKinney Scholarship ($,1,000)
This scholarship is given in memory of Dr. Leon R. McKinney, Class of 1928. In making this award, preference is given to residents of New York.

Judah E. Beck 

Class of 1948 Scholarship: ($1,000)

This scholarship, established by the Class of 1948, is awarded to a medical student in good standing.

Daniel Carnegie

Class of 1949 Scholarship: ($1,000)

This scholarship, established by the Class of 1949 at its 50th reunion, is awarded to a student in good standing with financial need.

Kathryn Garrett

Class of 1959 Scholarship: ($2,500)

This scholarship, established by the Class of 1959, is awarded to a freshman student who demonstrates high academic promise and financial need.

Gregory V. Williams

Dr. & Mrs. August C. Terrence Scholarship: ($5,000)
This award is given to a deserving medical student in memory of Dr. & Mrs. August C. Terrence. Dr. Terrence, Class of 1928, a former president of HUMAA, practiced medicine in Opelousas, Louisiana. In selecting the recipient, preference is given to residents of Louisiana.

Kanisha Hall

Alice Tomkins Davis Scholarship: ($1,000)

This scholarship is awarded to honor Mrs. Alice Tompkins Davis, who served as Executive Director of HUMAA for fourteen years (1982-1996). The scholarship is awarded to a worthy and deserving student from the District of Columbia who has excelled academically.

Katreena Whitted 

Dr. Charles A. Pinderhughes Memorial Scholarship: ($3,000)
This scholarship was established by Mrs. Elaine Pinderhughes in memory of her husband Dr. Charles A. Pinderhughes following his death in February 1998. Dr. Pinderhughes' most significant contributions, in the field of psychiatry, were his theories of group related paranoias and psycho-physiological bonding. This scholarship is awarded to a student who best exemplifies, through academic achievement and research interest, the potential to carry forward the life work of Dr. Charles A. Pinderhughes in the field of phychiatry.

Anique Forrester 

Christine T. George Memorial Scholarship: ($1,000)

This award was established in 2001 in memory of Christine T. George by her son Dr.Theodore R. George Jr. '60. Preference is given first to a medical student from the state of Ohio and second to a student from the District of Columbia. Eligibility is based solely on need.

Bryson Andrew Nicholson

Alwyn H. Granady, M.D.'54, Memorial Scholarship Fund
This scholarship established by the family of the late Dr. Alwyn H. Granady is awarded to a student in good standing who has demonstrated high ethical and moral standards, and who has an interest in the field of internal medicine.

Ifechi D. Anya

Hampton Barker Memorial Scholarship ($1,000)
The Class of 1981 in memory of their classmate Hampton Barker established this scholarship. The award is made to a student who is outstanding in research.

Rishi Balkissoon

Dorothy Gaither, M.D., Memorial Scholarship ($1,000)
This scholarship was established by the Class of 1970 in memory of their classmate Dr. Dorothy Gaither. The award is made to a student in good standing with the greatest financial need.

Adedoyin O. Kalejaiye

Stanley R. Samms, M.D., Memorial Scholarship ($1,000)
This scholarship established by the children of the late Dr. Stanley Samms is awarded to a student with an interest in Internal Medicine. Preference is given to students from the Caribbean and/or Washington, D.C.

Lana de Souza

William A. Cleland, M.D. Memorial Scholarship ($1,000)

This scholarship, established in 2002 with a gift from the estate of Dr. William A. Cleland, Class of 1933, is awarded to a student with an interest in pediatric medicine. Preference is given to students from North Carolina.

Malika Oglesby

Leo & Tommie Pickett Memorial Scholarship ($1,000)
Established by Anthony C. Pickett, M.D. Class of 1991, in memory of his parents Leo & Tommie Pickett. The recipient of this award was the highest ranking first year student from the state of California. This award is to be used for books, supplies, or housing.

Brandy Nicole Adams 

Reynold E. Burch, M.D. Memorial Scholarship ($1,000) This award is made to a student with an interest in Obstetrics and Gynecology in memory of Dr. Reynold E. Burch, Class of 1942. Preference is given to students born and raised in Maine or New Jersey.

Hetal Bhingradia

Earl E. Fredrick Jr., M.D. Scholarship ($6,500)
As a result of the generosity of The Sumner Allen Bragg and
Janet Harmon Bragg Foundation, a scholarship is presented
in honor of Earl E. Fredrick Jr., M.D., Class of 1958.  This
scholarship is awarded to a first year African American
medical student with demonstrated potential.  The award
will be renewed in the second, third, and fourth years,
providing the student remains in good standing.

T. Wilkins Davis Award ($1,000)
The family of Dr. T. Wilkins Davis, Class of 1945, is establishing an endowed scholarship to honor Dr. Davis, a radiologist and one of the incorporators of HUMAA. The recipient of this award must demonstrate a commitment to community service both within the College of Medicine and throughout the broader community. Preference is given to students from the Carolinas.

Kimberly Jernigan

Leslie L. Alexander, M.D. Scholarship ($1,000)
This endowed scholarship was established by Major General (Dr.) George A. Alexander, Class of 1977, in memory of his father Dr. Leslie L. Alexander, Class of 1952, a professor of radiology and a former HUMAA Executive Board member. The late Dr. Alexander made medical history when he was elected the first African American Vice President of the American College of Radiology. The scholarship is awarded to a junior or senior medical student who has excelled academically and demonstrated an interest in the field of radiation oncology or diagnostic radiology.

Tangayi Githu 

John L. and Minnie D. Trotman Memorial Scholarship ($1,000)
This scholarship was established by Charles J. Trotman, M.D.,MBA,
Class of 1966, in memory of his parents, John L. and Minnie D.
Trotman.  Mr. and Mrs. Trotman were educators who devoted their
lives to the education of the youth i Southeast Alabama. This
scholarship is awarded to a junior or senior in the upper quartile
of the class.  Preference is given to individuals born and reared
in Alabama and/or graduates of Morehouse College or Spelman
College.

Chidinma Ify Osefo

Ivan S. and Eunice L. Lloyd Memorial Scholarship ($1,000)
Raymond A. Lloyd, M.D.'66 established this scholarship in
memory of his parents, Ivan S. Lloyd M.D.'30 and his wife
Eunice L. Lloyd.  Dr. Ivan Lloyd spent his entire career in
politics, government and practicing medicine in Jamaica. He
received his country's highest honor, the Order of Jamaica,
in 1992.  His wife and partner, Eunice Louise Scott Lloyd,
spent her life serving as a mid-wife and helping the poor and
indigent through such organizations as the Women's
Federation of Jamaica.  Within a span of over seventy years
twenty-five members of the Lloyd family would graduate
from Howard University, including Errol Lloyd, M.D.'71 and
Raymond Lloyd II, M.D.'90.  This scholarship is awarded to
a junior or senior student in the top 25% of the class who
plans to go into politics and medicine.  Preference is given
to individuals born and reared in Jamaica or one of the
Caribbean islands.

Naima B. Jacobs-El

Nia Gantt Memorial Scholarship ($250)
This award has been established by the Class of 2004 as part of their class gift. The Nia Gantt Memorial Scholarship is awarded to a female freshman or sophomore student who exhibits a determination and a love for medical education despite having to overcome complex difficulties in her life, and who has demonstrated herself to be an inspiration to other students to strive for excellence in medical education.

Tamareal Nicole Ross

Robert Henderson Memorial Scholarship ($250)
This award has been established by the Class of 2004 as part of their class gift. The Robert Henderson Memorial Scholarship is awarded to a male freshman or sophomore student who scored in the top 25 of the Structure and Function section in their freshman year curriculum and who demonstrates extracurricular interest in the arts, athletics or creative writing.

HUMAA Scholar
Since 1993, the Howard University Medical alumni Association, Inc., has provided a four-year scholarship, covering full tuition and fees, to an incoming first year student.

HUMAA Third Year Improvement Award: ($8,000)
Two awards of $2,000 to junior students who have made the greatest academic improvement by their third year.

HUMAA Merit Achievement Scholarship: ($4,500)
An award in the amount of $1500 is given to one sophomore, one junior and one senior students who are in the top 25% of their class, who have not received any failing grades and who have not received a HUMAA scholarship this academic year.

David Jamarr Rice * Carlos Williams * David McCall 

HUMAA General Scholarship: ($4,000) Four students chosen by lottery will each receive an award in the amount of $1,000. The lottery is open to currently enrolled Howard medical students who have not received another HUMAA scholarship this academic year. Students must be present to win.
