About

The Howard University Medical Alumni Association (HUMAA) was organized in 1871 by five graduates of that year: Drs. Danforth B. Nichols, Joseph A. Sladen, L. M. Bowen, William W. Bernitt, and George W. Brooks. HUMAA was incorporated in the District of Columbia in 1945 as an independent, not-for-profit 501(c)3 organization by members of the medical Class of 1945, W. Lamar Bomar, Robert W. Briggs Sr., T. Wilkins Davis, Bernard Kapiloff, and John A. Kennedy Jr. From the very beginning, HUMAA has been an alumni-organized and run organization.

HUMAA’s mission is to support the Howard University College of Medicine (HUCM). This mission is accomplished by giving scholarships to medical students, providing long white coats for the graduating seniors, sponsoring the annual welcome luncheon for the freshmen, organizing a monthly alumni speaker series to mentor and educate current students on the range of career options available, and endowing a Chair in Basic Sciences at HUCM. HUMAA granted its first scholarship of $550 during the 1957-58 school year and in 2017 granted $164,500 to HUCM students.
